I’m going to talk about a topic that will probably affect most of us at some time in our life. One of the things we experience as women is our period. We may not like it, but as I’ve said before; it means that you are on your way to becoming a woman.
A few days before your period is due, you may notice that you begin to have cramping pains in the lower part of your stomach. These pains can be mild, or they can feel like you have a small badger trying to burrow into your belly.
Every month after you ovulate, your ovaries make a hormone called progesterone. This hormone triggers hormones called prostaglandins that cause your uterus to cramp during menstruation.
Cramps are not really all that unusual, but they can be problematic. Cramps on their own aren’t supposed to knock you out. They usually occur in the day or two before your period arrives. They end after a few days, and can usually be handled with a little Tylenol or Motrin. You may also want to ask about some over the counter stuff like Midol or Pamprin. If your mom or mom type person has any experience with cramps, she may be able to recommend some remedies to help you out.
Cramps can be uncomfortable, but if you find that your cramps are so bad that you can’t even get out of bed, you need to talk to your ‘rents about it. There is a condition called dysmenorrhea, which is a medical word for “Really awful cramps.” If over the counter stuff is not working, you probably need to come in for a checkup.
Take care and talk to you next week.
